They are close, they are the biggest market team to offer a contract to him but the Angels just offered him a 8 year contract as well. It depends on whether he wants to stay on the west coast or come back east.

With the Yankees signing Sabathia and now Burnett, the Sox should be more active. They do not like to make a bunch of noise so this shows they want him bad.
