No one on…no outs. The batter is called out on “strike three.” The pitch eludes the catcher and rolls toward the first base dugout. The batter-runner takes off for first and is running in fair territory when the catcher’s throw to first hits him/her. He/she has advanced about two-thirds of the way to first when he/she is struck by the ball. IS HE/SHE OUT?

safe cant hit the runner in the base line as long as he Swing at the pitch.

No, he/she is only out if it was a live ball hit by a batter, if its a throw it doesnt count

It is recorded as an out but he can advance to first base.
He is part of the field and if he did not purposely attempt to
interfere with the thrown ball then he is safe at first and may take 2nd base at his own risk.

Out

according to the official rules of baseball section 6.05 subsection j & k

A batter is out when-
(j) After a third strike or after he hits a fair ball, he or first base is tagged before he touches first base;
(k) In running the last half of the distance from home base to first base, while the ball is being fielded to first base, he runs outside (to the right of) the three-foot line, or inside (to the left of) the foul line, & in the umpire’s judgment in so doing interferes with the fielder taking the throw at first base, in which case the ball is dead; except that he may run outside (to the right of) the three-foot line or inside (to the left of) the foul line to avoid a fielder attempting to field a batted ball;
Rule 6.05(k) Comment: The lines marking the three-foot lane r a part of that lane & a batter-runner is required to have both feet within the three-foot lane or on the lines marking the lane. The batter-runner is permitted to exit the three-foot lane by means of a step, stride, reach or slide in the immediate vicinity of first base for the sole purpose of touching first base.

A batter is only entitled to run in fair territory in the last half of the distance to AVOID a fielder.or in the ''immediate area'' to touch the base.

realistic has this one right. Its recorded as an out because it wouldnt be fair for the pitcher for it to count as anything else. But hitting the batter while he is running to first is the fault of the thrower. The fielders have to work around the batter.

No, if a fielder beans a batter within the base bath with the baseball, then the runner is not out and the ball is still live. If the ball deflects off of him far enough and at the right angle, he might even be able to take second base on the botched throw.

Let me ask THIS question; Ball headed towards the first base dugout. Runner is two thirds down the line in fair territory. Catcher throws and hits runner. What the HELL is the catcher aiming at!?!?!? Left center field?? Sure is not first base!

no in the rules the runner is only out on a force play or in a run down when the other player as posession of the ball in his mitt, so this runner would be safe

No.

Leafer is got it right. He even quoted the rule. It is still interference whether it was intentional or not. The ball rolling toward the first base dugout does not necessarily mean it rolled halfway there. It could have only rolled a couple of feet from home plate. Smart catchers will try to hit runners going to first if they r running inside the baseline.

Rule 6.05(k) Comment: The lines marking the three-foot lane r a part of that lane & a batter-runner is required to have both feet within the three-foot lane or on the lines marking the lane. The batter-runner is permitted to exit the three-foot lane by means of a step, stride, reach or slide in the immediate vicinity of first base for the sole purpose of touching first base.

l agree that u must be within the two lines & that if u r in fair territory inside the foul line & u get hit u r out. How can u argue when the guy actually copies the rule down. However, the question never states whether the runner is inside the line or not. The Foul line is fair territory & the rule states that the runner must have both feet inside or ON the two lines. So it would all depend on whether the runner was inside the foul line or on the foul line. Also another point is ''.and in the umpire’s judgment in so doing interferes with the fielder taking the throw at first base.'' If the ball roles towards the first base dugout & the runner is in fair territory there is no way any umpire would rule that the runner was interfering with the throw to first base. As Uncle Unicorn said if the ball rolled towards the first base dugout & the throw hits the runner in fair territory then the ball was not even going to come close to first base.
