Sorry Padres fan, but they r jettisoning their talent, as if they wanted to compete with the Marlins. But honestly, the Padres lost all hope of competing the day they fired Bochy. Rockies have no hope, but the Giants will compete hard this year, & in 2010 will be a very good team. The real competition in 09 will be between the Diamondbacks & Dodgers, & sorry Dbacks, but Dodgers have more talent, & better managers than you. And me being a Dodger fan has nothing to do with it :)

billions of people have the capability to predict the NL West, but none of them would have a clue what theyre talking about. predictions r for losers. last July the Chargers, Cowboys & Patriots were predicted to be the front runners for the Super Bowl. two of them failed to make the playoffs & the one team that did has the worst record of any playoff team. how many people predicted the Dolphins would be in the playoffs ?????? how many people predicted the Rays would win the AL East ? predictions r stupid .. ill wait & see how the season plays out. im much more interested in what really happens then what some moron THINKS might happen.

Well, to answer your question technically: there are 120 possible outcomes in a five team division (5*4*3*2*1). Given that relatively small number of outcomes, l think yes, someone can predict the standings for the National League.
My attempt:

Dodgers

Rockies
Padres
It is entirely possible that the NL West will be even weaker than it was last year. Perhaps a sub .500 division winner.

The west always seem wide open so anything could happen. Is not the owner going through a divorce & cutting the payroll to as low as 40 million this season?
Look for the Peavy to the Cubs trade to heat up again as the Cubs just picked up their 2nd new utility guy & traded (pending player physicals) Jason Marquis. One of the major sticking points to the Peavy/Cubs deal. Padres will have about 5-7 new players l think when all is said & done.
Padres could end anywhere from 1st to last by my calculations. No team is head & shoulders above the others there so they have a chance.
