The DH is a position too, Edgar Martinez will make the Hall of Fame in 2010, just like relief pitchers make

the Hall, i.e. Fingers, Eck, Gossage, Sutter, etc, DH is will start to make the Hall too.Paul Molitor spent half of his career as a DH.Why are people so hung up on Edgar being a DH?It has been a position in the AL since 1973, that is 35 years.

l totally agree with you. Great point-DH is a position. It gives the AL an advantage each year in the World Series. Molitor and E. Martinez were excellent hitters at the DH spot.

Edgar is Hall-worthy & l hope some day he makes it. He will look GREAT on a plaque.

But there is no way he will get elected from his first ballot; hoping he gets 10% is probably aiming high.

The DH position still, inexplicably, carries this idiotic stigma with it. The DH has been with us over a third of a century, & there r STILL fans -- many of them born in the DH era, so they've never known anything else & l honestly cannot understand how it gets up their noses -- who think that There is Something Wrong With It or Both Leagues Need To Be The Same. l find nothing wrong with the DH (as a rule in the book; l find a LOT wrong with how some of the AL teams utilize the DH role) & find the demand for league symmetry pointless. (Note, however, l also have no issue with burger joints selling burgers with AND without cheese. Consumers manage to wend their way through that daily challenge just fine. Deciding to watch a game with or without the DH is in the same realm of complexity. But l suppose there r the anti-cheesists & the pro-fromagers out there, somewhere, protesting in front of McDonald is HQ, demanding that the question be settled once & for all, & the situation put to rights at last. With? Without? PICK ONE ALREADY!!!)

Anyway. the Hall voters have only, in recent years, begun sorting out what they want relievers to look like before elevating them to the eternal glory of the bronze plaque. There is NO WAY they're ready to start making the affirmative decision on a designated hitter, despite that Martinez represents THE BEST DESIGNATED HITTER CANDIDATE the electorate is likely to see until, oh, Ortiz or Thomas gets on the ballot. (Molitor l do not really count -- he played a lot of games in the field, & had over 3000 hits. That rather overrode his DHness.)

So l am only hoping the voters do not tank Martinez off the ballot first go. This is the best DH in baseball history (the DH award is named after him! Yes, a real MLB-sanctioned award), about to stand before the Hall is primary electorate. They should recognize what that means and, eventually, vote him in as is his due. But nah, it is not gonna happen quickly.

l am a lifelong Mariners fan & I'd love to see Edgar in the Hall, but l do not think he will make it right away.

His doubles total is certainly Hall-worthy as r his averages - ba, obp, ops, etc. But, his career was not quite long enough to accumulate enough total hits, HR, RBI.

For some inexplicable reason, the M is would not bring him up to the majors in the late 80s. At the time, the Mariners were horrible - but for some reason they kept Edgar in the minors for a couple of extra years despite the fact he hitting well every September when he was called up. Jim Presley hit .230 as the regular 3B in 1988, Edgar certainly would have been an upgrade.

l love Edgar - he was also one of the classiest guys in the game - & l think he will get into the Hall eventually. But it will take a couple of ballots before it happens.

Every league in the world uses the DH. Pitchers should not have to run the bases and hit when they have trouble staying healthy as it is.

It is like the hall of fame voters blame guys like Edgar Martinez for major league baseball having a DH rule. If the voters arent happy with the rules of the game to the extent that it effects the way they vote, they should give up their vote.

l think he belongs in there, not as a first ballot guy, but he belongs. The problem is that a lot of the voters r stuck on 2 offensive numbers - 3,000 hits or 500 homeruns. Edgar is not close to either of those & if history tells us anything it is that if u r as far away as he is (753 hits shy & 191 homeruns shy) u have to be a superior fielder at a premium defensive position to make the Hall. Now l do not agree with that at all, but unfortunately that is the way it goes down.

It is not because he was a DH why he wo not get in. He wo not get in because his stats are not Hall worthy.

Edgar Martinez made the position a completely respectable one. He will make the Hall. In a besides to this question, a DH is just as much a part of an AL team as any other position. A-Fraud winning the MVP over Big Papi in '05 was a disgrace. A-Fraud could not hold Papi is jock that year.
