l think so.....the only reason he got the 62 saves is becuase his team gave him the opertunity. Who says is Paplebon or Lidge or Rivera had 64 save oppertunites they wouldent break the record?
Second part is who do you think are the Top 5 Closers in MLB my opinion 1.Brad Lidge 2.Mariano Rivera 3.Johnathan Paplebon 4.The Twins Closer...im sorry his name just draws a blank in my head at the moment 5.K-rod
Dose anyone agree with me?

l think he is waaaay overrated. he is good, & he throws hard, but he throws so hard that he basically becomes a huge defensive liability as soon as he releases the pitch. l think Rivera is a good closer, as well as Hoffman. Lidge is alright but he tends to get frazzled easily. Papelbon is not that good, l think he is overrated too. he just plays for a good team so his name gets put out there more. here r my current top 5 closers:
1. Mariano Rivera - Yankees ( l despise the Yankees more than any one but Rivera is still a pretty good closer. 2. Joe Nathan - Twins 3. Joakim Soria - Royals 4. Trevor Hoffman - formerly of the Padres 5. Jose Valverde - highly underrated if u ask me.

If not the best he is certainly one of the best and how can anyone say he is overrated, the numbers speak for themselves. An argument can always be made for others but l am sure you will have to agree that he is among the elite closers in the game today.

No offense but your theory is flawed. It is like saying that Ryan Howard was ''lucky'' to hit 50+ homeruns.
A local baseball beat writer (St. Louis) said that he would have given the AL MVP to K-Rod.

Wow, l think the reason he got 62 saves is he is good. It helps that his team gave him the opportunity but Mariano never saved 62 games & he did have plenty of opportunities in different seasons to do so. Paplebon may get a chance in the future. Mariano is still number one in my book. K-rod two, Lidge, Valverde, Wilson, Wood, Nathan of the Twins & the guy from KC, Soria r all very good. l think you're point about opportunities could make any one of the list number one but Mariano has the history to back it.

K-Rod is a very good closer but just because he set the save record does not make him the best.
Here is my top 5: 1. Mariano Rivera (not a Yankees fan but the guy is lights out) 2. Joe Nathan (under appreciated) 3. Joakim Soria (if he played anywhere else everybody would know who he is) 4. Johnathan Paplebon (clutch every year) 5. Brad Lidge (based on the last few years, another year like 2008 & he moves up)
I'd probably put K-Rod at number 6.

It is hard to argue with your top five.
Based on 2008 alone. 1. Lidge 2. Rivera 3. Soria 4. K-Rod 5. Papelbon
Since 2004. 1. Rivera 2. Nathan 3. K-Rod 4. Papelbon 5 Lidge

The man had 62 saves, that is part of history and you can not take it away from him.
As a reliever, your team has to give you the opportunities to have a save. In his case, he had more opportunities than the average reliever. If Lidge had as many opportunities, they would have 62 saves as well, same for Papelbon, Nathan, Wagner, and Mariano.

l agree. He is definitely overrated but l would still put him in the top 5. He has excellent stuff & is still very young. Your top 5 closers r definitely right, l just have them in a different order.
Here is my top 5.
1. Brad Lidge - He was the hottest closer this past year. Hes had 51 straight games without a blown save & was unstoppable in the Phillies' championship run.
2. Mariano Rivera - One of the best closers of all time & still uses that cutter to fool his opponents. He is back to his old form. 39 saves, 1.40 ERA.
3. Francisco Rodriguez - As much as u think he is overrated, he has averaged 49 saves the past 4 years.
4. Jonathan Papelbon - He looked a little bit more human this year with 5 blown saves.
5. Joe Nathan - This guy has been Mr. Consistent. For the past 5 years, he has averaged 40 saves & maintained an ERA of 1.82. But, he did blow 6 saves.

no. he is quite good. the closer position is overrated. a closer comes in to pitch, usually with no base runners, and retires the sides, and receives a save. a middle reliever may pitch a few innings, and comes into to a game with runners on base. the middle reliever has a more difficult task at hand. most relief pitchers(not all) are not quality starters.
top 5 Rivera Nathan Rodriguez Pappelbon Lidge

l agree with your top 5 players, though l would have the order a bit different.
As for K-Rod, he is very good but not the best. He had far more opportunities than any other closer this year, and almost 2/3 of his saves came with 3 run leads. His overall velocity has been steadily declining and his overall numbers were on par with the league average for closers (sans Saves obviously).

He was in the right place at the right time. The AL west has horrible last year and save opportunities fell in his lap like crazy.
If any of the pitchers you listed above had played for the Angels last year they to would have broke the record.
He is a good closer but nothing great.

No, l do not think he is overrated at all. He is definitely the number one closer, with Brad Lidge coming in at 2nd. (Brad stunk after Pujols lit his world up). But l think Mariano Rivera is the most overrated closer in baseball. He is getting old and unrealiable. Also, the only reason Jonathan Paplebon gets so much attention is because he plays in Boston. He does not come close to K-Rod

In todays era of over inflated save stats, all closers are overrated.

l would say
1. As much as l hate to say it but Mariano Rivera. Future Hall Of Famer.
2. Joe Nathan: No matter the situation Joe is always calm, cool, & collected. He has the types of pitches that make a closer amazing.
3. Brian Fuentes: The movement he generates on every one of his pitches is incredible.
4. Jonathan Papelbon: The stare that he has is just scary. He is a rare type of closer that uses intimidation like no other.
5. Trevor Hoffman: The all time holder of career saves is still a great closer.

who is to say that any of those guys you listed would not get hurt/break down/get over exposed if they had that may opputunities. Nathan, and Mo l think could handle it.. Pap and Lidge, no way.
K-Rod is not over rated. except in the playoffs.
