He is a left hander. He pitches pretty straight forward. Most of the time he will get the wiffle ball with the bat. It all comes down to my throwing skills. It seems the wind blows the stupid little balls way off sometimes, so l resorted to tennis balls which bounce off every which way. I've been cautious about getting him to get real baseballs. We have a small wooden bat, but it is heavy.
So, my question is, what can l do to help him get better? l was never in actual sports growing up. Besides my deep love of baseball, and watching him pitch straight at me, what else can l do for him?

This site has some good drills you can do with him, but the best thing is just to practice. practice. practice :]

For hitting, find a Tee, a cone works well. If u can afford it there r some pitching machines for kids.
Also, go to the batting cages. l had my 5yr old daughter in there. Use the Slow Baseball, NEVER the softball. The ball is too heavy & the Arc will throw the swing off. He will be swinging up hill.
Most of all, just play with him. At 5 it is not going to kill him not to be on a team. My town does not even have a baseball program for kids that young.

Get a bucket of real tee balls -- any sporting goods store or major department store (Target) should have this. A dozen balls will run $15-25, so keep an eye out for a sale to get near the low end of that range. Or check second-hand sports stores, or ur local Craig is list.
Tee balls r much more like baseballs than either whiffle or tennis balls, but r not nearly so hard or heavy as a baseball (and they look like a baseball). They can be thrown & hit true, making practice that much more productive.
And yeah, practice a lot.

Fill the wiffle ball up with sand from your local beach. Tape all around to hold the sand in. How much sand u put in is based on how heavy you want it to feel. Poke a hole thru the tape and let some out if heavy. Duct tape can be used.

T-Ball is a total waist of time. Go buy a real baseball & a orange cone and sit your baseball on top of that. You are doing nothing wrong. Keep letting him pitch to you. Keep throwing him ground ball & pop ups. In real baseball ground ball do not keep coming at you straight. The most important thing is your spending time with your son.

T-Ball is a waste of time. Bring him to batting cages on slow. Buy him a tee and a net to hit into. Sign him up to the little league around age 8 where it starts real baseball.

tball is NOT a waste of time, it is where little kids learn about teamwork and the basic fundamentals of baseball as a team. Why is it you can not ''afford'' to get him in? If you're that poor cut back on going out for lunch everyday and cut back on the partying. Make box lunches for yourself for work and stay home a lot more. You will find the extra money.

Check with your local Little League Organization. l know our Little League will work with parents that can not afford it by either letting them play for free or by letting them pay what they can afford.
Or maybe in place of payment you can volunteer to work in the concession stand.

When l couldnt find anyone to pitch to me as a kid, l would hang a ball from a tree limb with a rope. Take one of those tennis balls, Poke a hole in opposite ends of the ball Get a piece rope, get it through the ball, in one end & out the other.( l used to skewer the ball with needle nose pliers, then pinch the rope with the pliers & pull the rope through the ball. ) tie a knot so the ball doesnt slip off. hang it from a tree so it hangs about stomach high to ur son. he can use this contraption while u sit & read a book, or u could kind of swing the ball towards ur son.
For learning to use the glove, really the best thing is to throw balls at him(play catch). Dont forget to roll balls to him on the ground too, just in case he ends up a short stop.
Get him on a team when u can, l know u will. That will help with learning the rules, & running the bases, team work, stuff like that.

most little league/tball leagues will waive the fee for kids who can not afford it. l would inquire with the league. Then follow up with Little League of America. Get him a tee and bat and ball. You can even lob underhanded pitches to him. At that age it is all about developing hand eye coordination

Try to find heavier wiffle balls that do not blow around in the wind as much. If your son is only 5 you should work on things like hand-eye coordination and things like that. Just make sure that he stays active and most importantly has fun. You do not need to get that serious by doing drills that will just get him bored of the game.
